What Causes A Fridge To Leak Water?

A leaking fridge is a common problem that homeowners and businesses deal with from time to time. If you notice puddles of water around your fridge, that could be a sign of a leaking fridge. Apart from being a safety hazard, water leaks from a fridge can cause possible water damage if not fixed in a timely manner. If your fridge is leaking water, be sure to call an experienced plumber in Blair County to fix the problem. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we can fix a leaking fridge and save you time and money.
Let’s look at what causes a fridge to leak water.

Blocked Defrost Drain

The defrost drain that leads to a drain pan may get blocked by food particles, ice, or food items placed in the fridge. A clogged defrost drain means water cannot pass through the hose, thereby causing an overflow and leakage. This problem is quite simple to fix. Just locate the defrost drain and use a small plastic pipe or a stiff wire to remove the blockage and cleanse the drain with soapy water and ammonia.

A Cracked Or Improperly Installed Drain Pan

A cracked or imbalanced drain pan can lead to water draining to the floor. Fixing this problem is as simple as examining the drain pan to see if there are any cracks on it or if it’s well balanced.

Malfunctioning Door Seal

Your refrigerator’s door seal may experience wear and tear due to frequent use or trappings between the fridge and the gasket. When the door seal won’t work properly, it means the unit will run constantly causing condensation build-up. You can fix this problem by cleaning the door seals or replacing worn-out seals.

Incorrect Tilting

You may be surprised to learn that a refrigerator isn’t supposed to be level with the level. Many people position their refrigerator in a level position with the ground making it drain incorrectly. You should tilt your refrigerator slightly backwards to drain properly. But ensure you don’t overdo it, otherwise you’ll make the unit less efficient.

Damaged Ice-Maker Tubes

Ice-maker tubes may develop problems such as water line malfunction, faulty water inlet valve, cracked plastic hoses, and loose connections. All of these can cause your fridge to leak water. Be sure to examine the ice-make tubes whenever you notice puddles of water at the back of your fridge.

Water Valve Failure

A water leak at the back of the fridge could be due to a malfunctioning water valve or a faulty solenoid switch. This problem may require the intervention of an experienced plumber as it can be a bit complicated for someone without experience. If the water valve is damaged or the solenoid switch isn't working properly, let a qualified plumber in Blair County fix the problem.
If you’ve tried inspecting your fridge upon noticing signs of water leakage and you don’t seem to determine the cause, call a reliable plumber to troubleshoot and fix the problem. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we have what it takes to identify the problem and fix it efficiently.
