How to Unblock a Sink Drain Trap

A sink drain trap is the curved pipe that connects a sink's drain to the adjacent wall fitting. The purpose of a sink drain trap is to collect food scraps and other waste that has drained from the ink and prevent them from forming a blockage deep within the plumbing system. It also retains water each time the sink drains to prevent sewer gases from rising back up through the drain. Therefore, it’s easy for waste and foreign objects to get stuck in the curved pipe and create a blockage. A clogged sink drain trap can cause water backflow, unpleasant smells, and slow drainage.

Here are some of the ways you can unblock a sink drain trap:

  • Pour Hot Water Down the Sink

When food oil, grease, fats, and soap residue get stuck in your sink drain trap, pouring hot water down the drain can dissolve the clog. This is the simplest way to unblock a clogged sink drain trap, which means it should be your first move when dealing with a blocked sink drain trap. Simply pour a kettle of hot water into the drain opening and see if the blockage loosens up.

  • Pour Baking Soda and Vinegar Down the Drain

If pouring hot water down the drain doesn’t fix the problem, you can try dislodging the blockage with baking soda and vinegar. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of vinegar solution. Next, cover the drain opening with a drain plug and wait for 15 minutes. Remove the drain plug and run hot water down the drain and see if the blockage clears.

  • Use A Plunger to Dislodge the Blockage

Fill the sink with hot water until it’s about halfway full and position the plunger over the drain opening. Start working the plunger up and down several times. If the blockage doesn’t clear after several attempts, try using a drain snake to dislodge the clog.

  • Remove The Sink Drain Trap and Clean It

If the methods mentioned above do not work, remove the sink drain trap and clean it.

Follow these steps to clean the sink drain trap:

  • Place a bucket under the sink drain trap to catch the water and debris left in the pipe.
  • Unscrew the slip joint nuts securing the trap to the sink drain and to the adjacent wall fitting.
  • Clean the interior of the sink drain trap and remove any debris that may be lodged in the pipe.
  • Use this opportunity to inspect the o-rings that sit underneath the slip-joint nuts to ensure they’re in good shape. If the o-rings are cracked or worn out, you should replace them.
  • Reassemble the trap and be careful not to overtighten the slip-joint nuts

If cleaning your sink drain trap doesn’t solve the problem, call a nearby plumber who has the expertise and proper tools to resolve the problem.
